Network Security Audit - Securing Your Network With More Than A Firewall
|

Nowadays, security has become a real problem mostly because the hacker industry has risen to higher levels and it is not only done for the fun of it but rather for information and and actual funds stealing. Aside from this very black view on the many security gaps any company and/or business has, you have to understand that the security of your network is very important, mostly because of that "black" reason mentioned above, and overall because you do not have to have information slipping through your hands in the worst possible cases. The unfortunate part is that you do not know exactly when you are the most protected from all these possible attacks and leaks, and there are moments when you simply have to be very careful with everything. The even more unfortunate part is that even if you hire the best security analysts, most of the time everything seems to be good, but there are cases in which there are a few things that can really be done. Overall, the whole idea is that the security of a certain network is not always infallible and it is better to be prepared for almost anything and not simply put up some firewalls on the computers in the network. The good news is that nowadays a new branch within network security has appeared and it is called network security audit.
These network security audits come in handy because they tell you the exact truth of a certain network's vulnerability in a way even a network security analyst cannot always do so. You see, the audit acts at first in a very interesting way, meaning that it first has to see where the problem is exactly and afterwards act upon it. Therefore, in the beginning he or she (the security audit) will poke and probe the server in someone's business identifying both possible and actual problems. This is the normal procedure and the results are almost amazing. After making all these "tests" (even if they are not actually tests), the audit will relate to you some frightening results, that can alarm almost every business owner that cares about their information security. A mistake that is often done by business owners is that because of their lack of information on the subject of network security (in some cases) they seem to only rely on their senior engineers and technicians that may indeed in some cases do their job, while in other cases they may not. Because of this, many security gaps appear almost "out of nowhere", especially since some technicians or network security consultants seem to think that the main problem solver is to put some port scanners and/or firewalls on all the computers in the building.
The purpose of a network security audit is, in the end not as some people think to access that "secret" data or to even corrupt it. Actually, the paradox is that the security audit comes as a help in securing all the data from those that indeed want to do so. That testing period in the beginning is done solely to show both the business manager what the problems are and to point them out in order to solve them later.
